Chapter Seventeen

The first moon was high above. The second moon rose and still Corree kept up the grueling pace. She was beginning to tire and would soon have to hunt. There had been evidence of game during the trek, but she hadn’t done more than take notice of it. Now Corree slowed down and quested for something edible. She almost trod on a long-furred rock runner. It had been standing stone-still, its long, scaled tail tight to the ground to feel vibrations. Even as its heavily muscled back legs bunched to leap, Corree slapped a paw on its back and snatched it up before it had a chance to do more than squeak its demise.

After blooding it, the rock runner was gone in two gulps. The energy it gave her surged through her veins before she had trotted over the slope. The scent of her quarry got stronger, and Corree quickened her pace. She was still gaining on the robot when the sun rose. With a growl of frustration, Corree looked for a safe place in which to rest.

She tried to send something to Tanna to let him know she was okay, but wasn’t sure it got through. The sun was completely above the horizon when she finally found a shaded place where the earth had been scoured from under several overhanging boulders. She sniffed, but nothing had sheltered there for some time. Crawling in to the cave in the back of the overhang, Corree tried to sleep, but that was as elusive as finding prey had been. Her stomach growled, and she answered with a frustrated growl of her own.

Finally she dozed off, but her sleep was interrupted by half remembered dreams. When she woke up, the sun had not set, but Corree could feel something not right. Tanna? No, none of the others were around. She sniffed and realized the metallic robot scent was very strong, as strong as it had been in the cavern of jewels. The robot had been stalking her even as she had been going after it. Corree knew it was waiting for her to leave her nest. So how would she get out of this one? Her shelter was tight with only the one entrance. The robot would kill her as soon as she showed a finger out the entrance.

She studied her furry and heavily clawed paw. No fingers, she was still a mountain cat. If she was in a different form. Corree thought furiously. What other form? If she was small enough, she could sneak out of another crack, something the robot might not expect. What could she mutate into? Maybe something like a flower snake. She hadn’t done anything so tiny, but there wasn’t much choice. Corree took great care in this change. The furry pelt receded, the walls of her shelter also receded as she shrank. She gasped painfully for air as her various organs crowded together. Then they mutated and she felt a little better. Arms and legs also shrank and disappeared.
